How Do I Create a Parenting Plan During the Coronavirus Outbreak?

A parent’s number one concern is the health and safety of their child. Generally, parents must work together in order to raise their child in a way that puts these priorities at the forefront. For divorced parents, this can be a little more difficult and unclear. It is because of this that parenting plans are made. These documents outline how both parents with to raise their child together, but separately.

In recent weeks, the outbreak of the Coronavirus has changed the everyday lives of many people in the world. As a result, many families are self-quarantined in order to limit the spread of the disease. This can make it difficult to follow a previously determined parenting plan. Other families may not have a parenting plan at all. It is because of this that one should be created or modified in order to be ready for the weeks and months ahead before this passes. Parents who are able to communicate well may finish this process simply, while other parents may need the assistance of a mediator or the court. Continue reading to learn about the steps you can take to create a temporary parenting plan for the new Coronavirus outbreak:

  • Prepare for the worst. While no one wants to consider what would happen if the Coronavirus was contracted by a parent or a child, it is important to have a plan in place in the event that it happens. This can include where the child would stay and where the parent would be quarantined.
  • Decide places where your child can and cannot travel to, based on infected areas.
  • Educate yourself so that you know the signs and symptoms of the virus as well as the safety measures to put in place. Symptoms can include a runny nose, dry cough, fever, or pneumonia.
  • Hire a mediator. This is an unbiased third-party who can work with both spouses towards reaching agreements about temporary terms of child custody. The goal is that both former-spouses are able to live with the decision and is in the best interest of the child.
